Holiday Essential Item Drive for HomeAgain

Brief Organizational Description:
HomeAgain is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing shelter and essential services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Greater Richmond. Our mission is to empower our clients to achieve stability and self-sufficiency.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
We’re looking for volunteer groups to host essential item drives to help gather much-needed household basics for our clients. These items are critical for individuals and families transitioning from homelessness to stable housing, as they often need essential supplies to make their new spaces feel like home. This drive offers your group a flexible, impactful way to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Groups hosting an essential item drive will:

  • Set goals and organize the collection of essential household items. Considerations include:
    • Estimate Based on Group Size and Resources: Small groups might aim for 50-100 items spread across categories like sheets, comforters, towels, and cleaning supplies. Larger groups may aim for 200-500 items or more, depending on capacity.
    • Specific Goals by Category: If your group would like to focus on "move-out kits" for families exiting homelessness, aim for 20-30 complete kits. A move-out kit may include items such as twin/full sheets, pillows, towels, cleaning supplies, shower curtains, and basic kitchenware.
  • Promote the drive within your networks.
  • Drives can be conducted wherever you like. Host a drive at school, at your office, at your place of worship, outside a grocery store--literally anywhere!

At the end of the drive, coordinate drop-off with HomeAgain’s Development Director, Sheri Trice, at strice@homeagainrichmond.org. The items can be delivered to our administrative office at 2001 Maywill St., Suite 201, Richmond, VA 23220.

  • Optional: During the drop-off, volunteers are invited to help transport, sort, and organize items for easy access by case managers and clients.

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

None! Just a desire to help ensure that Richmond's littlest ones are happy, healthy and safe this holiday season!

Time Commitment:

This is solely up to the volunteer hosting the drive! A drive could be as short as several hours, or as long as a month--totally the volunteer's perogative!

Other Information:

  • Volunteer Hours Verification: Hours can be tracked by email confirmation or volunteer log, verified by HomeAgain’s Development Director.
  • Special Instructions: When ready to drop off, please confirm details with Sheri Trice at strice@homeagainrichmond.org to coordinate timing and needs.

Hosting an essential item drive is a powerful way for your group to give back. With your support, we can help make stable housing a reality for families in need. Thank you for considering this opportunity!
