Brief Organizational Description:
Communities In Schools (CIS) of Richmond’s mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. By connecting students with critical resources, CIS works to break down barriers to success, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically and beyond.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Support students' personal and academic growth through weekly one-on-one or small group sessions, fostering a nurturing environment. Mentors build supportive relationships, helping students achieve individual goals, develop life skills, and boost self-esteem through diverse activities like games, arts and crafts, and reading.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Mentors with CIS of Richmond typically have the following responsibilities and duties:
- Offer Consistent Support: Meet regularly with students, listening to their challenges and celebrating their achievements.
- Build Trusting Relationships: Develop a positive, supportive connection with students.
- Be a Positive Role Model: Demonstrate responsible behavior, good communication, and strong problem-solving skills.
- Promote Personal Growth: Help students develop social-emotional skills, such as resilience, confidence, and self-awareness.
- Foster Academic Motivation: Encourage students to stay engaged with their learning and persevere through challenges.
Mentors also collaborate with CIS staff to ensure student progress and may participate in ongoing training or check-ins to enhance their impact.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
- Completion of a one-hour orientation
- Submission of a volunteer application for CIS
- Successful completion of a national background check
- Reliable form of transportation to report to the school site
- A positive, approachable personality with a genuine desire to motivate and support students
Your commitment to these requirements helps us create a positive mentoring experience that empowers young people in our community!
Time Commitment:
Volunteers are asked to commit to mentoring sessions, with a minimum requirement of bi-weekly (every other week) participation. Weekly mentoring is preferred, and sessions typically last between 30 minutes to an hour based on student availability. Your consistent presence will significantly impact our students' educational journeys.
Other Information (if applicable):
- Orientation- Upon expressing interest, volunteers will receive registration information for a one-hour orientation that must be completed prior to starting their mentoring sessions. This orientation will cover important topics, including best practices and expectations.
- Recommended attire- Volunteers should dress in comfortable, casual attire suitable for a school environment. Business casual is not required.
- What to bring- Volunteers should bring a positive attitude. CIS often provides supplies such as notebooks, crafts, games, and books that can be utilized during mentoring sessions, but feel free to bring any additional materials you think might enhance your time with the students.
