Grow with Cornerstone Farm
Community Food Collaborative’s (CFC) Mission:
To transform community health, wealth, and vitality by re-imagining our relationships to food and farming. In working towards our mission we focus on 3 key determinants of community health: environmental stewardship, economic development, and food and nutrition access. We teach the principles and practice of these three complex issues through a network of schoolyard farms and educational programs that engage residents of all ages.
What it's like at Cornerstone Farm:
We currently have about 1 acre of land in production, including the large garden area and our orchard/food forest. The farm is located on the back side of Fairfield Middle School. The open campus style of Fairfield allows for students to walk past the farm everytime classes switch. If you volunteer with us during a school day you will likely see some students.
Volunteers will:
- Have an opportunity to learn and practice valuable skills that can be brought back to the home garden or farm!
- Plant & care for perennial and annual herbs, flowers, and heirloom vegetables (pruning, trellising)
- Help maintain the growing area (weeding, mulching garden beds & footpaths)
- Harvest produce & flowers
- Most importantly, you can expect to have a lot of fun while working and learning!
What to Wear:
- Close-toed shoes for comfort and safety
- Layers that you feel comfortable moving around in
- Weather appropriate clothing: we recommend long pants and long sleeves to protect from bug bites, scratches, the sun, etc.
Bring:
- Refillable Water Bottle
- Sunscreen
- Snack
Gloves, knee pads, and necessary farm tools are provided. Volunteer events are often subject to the weather. In the event of rain, it may be necessary to reschedule depending on the tasks planned.
