The Great Richmond Trivia Bee - A fundraising event to support The READ Center!

Brief Organizational Description: 

The READ Center (Reading and Education for Adult Development) is a community-based nonprofit organization helping adults improve their lives through adult literacy. READ provides free classroom instruction, one-to-one tutoring, and community programs to adults who want to improve their reading, writing, math and digital skills. 

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
The READ Center's signature annual fundraising event, The Great Richmond Trivia Bee, will take place on Wednesday, April 23rd from 5:30-8:30PM. The event will be held at The Dewey Gottwald Center (2301 W Leigh St, Richmond, VA 23220). The game itself will be run by Challenge Entertainment. 

We will need volunteers to help with an array of tasks prior to, during and after the event including: set-up, breakdown, as well as specific-game tasks like giving out hints (for the trivia questions), directing attendees, or assisting with check-in. 

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

We need: 

  • 4-6 volunteers to assist with check-in, direct attendees, and help keep things running smoothly. 
  • 4-6 volunteers to walk around during trivia rounds selling hints to teams. *This role requires a fully charged smartphone or tablet to process payments through READ’s Square App.*
  • 6-10 volunteers for set-up / 6-10 volunteers for breakdown 

The set-up and breakdown volunteers do not have to be from the same group of people, you may sign up for either or both options. Set-up/breakdown will including setting up and breaking down tables (large and cocktail sized), chairs, etc. all of which can be physically taxing so please keep that in mind! 

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
None

Time Commitment:
Time committment is depedent upon which job the volunteer is doing but for a rough estimate: 

Set-up: 3:00pm-5:00pm 

During the event: 5:00pm-8:00pm

Breakdown:8:00pm-9:15pm

We are fairly flexible with time committment and will reach out to all volunteers to confirm timing prior to the event.

Other Information (if applicable):

  • Food will be provided to all volunteers. We will also have water/soda available but feel free to bring your own water bottle or snacks!
  • We will keep a volunteer log to track times and are happy to sign off on any forms for volunteer requirements. 
  • All parking information, timing specifics and any other special instructions will be provided prior to the event to each individual/group who registers.
