Thinking Big with Big Data

Brief Organizational Description: 

GiSTEM Inc's mission is to instill confidence, inspire determination, influence critical thinking, and promote teamwork while molding the minds of girls for the future of true innovation.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:

Thinking Big with Big Data is a one-day in-person event for 9th-12th grade students to explore Big Data with a focus on AI and machine learning. Professionals from a variety of backgrounds and industries will provide workshops on these topics. This event is designed to expose and establish a pipeline of young talent that will be prepared for future careers with leading organizations.

We are anticipating hosting approximately 200 students from Richmond Public Schools at this year's event.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

Set-Up [Time Commitment ~ 3 hours]: October 1, 2023 *Day before event* (1:00 PM - 5:00 PM) 

Assignments include setting up registration, tables & chairs, print materials, equipment, etc. Afternoon shift only.

Total: 10

Registration [Time Commitment ~ 6 hours]: October 2, 2023 (8:00 AM -2:00 PM)

Arrive early to assist with setting up the registration table. Check-in students, volunteers, speaker, sponsors, and teachers during the morning of the event. All day shift.

Total: 5

Group Leader [Time Commitment ~ 5.5 hours]: October 2, 2023 (8:30 AM -2:00 PM)

Assigned to a group of students for the day. Responsible for making sure students stay on track and attend their workshop sessions. All day shift.

Total: 10

Workshop Mentor [Time Commitment ~ 2 hours]: October 2, 2023 (9:00 AM - 1:30 PM)
Assist students with the workshops to ensure they are progressing through session assignments and address any questions. All day shift.

Total: 8

Tear Down [Time Commitment ~ 2 hours]: October 2, 2023 (2:00 PM - 4:00 PM)
Help with cleaning up the event. Will need to be available near the end of the event to assist with packing up preparing for post-mixer. Afternoon shift only.

Total: 5

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
STEM Professionals are encouraged to volunteer to be a Workshop Mentor but the event is open to anyone willing to volunteer!

*Background check is recommended for volunteers*
