Celebrate Earth Day at The Great Big Cleanup & Community Cookout
Brief Organizational Description:
Our goal is to empower neighbors in low-access and low-income communities to pursue health, self-reliance, and community involvement through urban agricultural practices and environmental education. SOCO supports multiple, community-sustained urban agricultural projects that inspire and provide, while building partnerships, educating, and connecting residents to each other and to resources. We highly value growth, spiritual health, inclusivity, endless learning, resourcefulness, collaboration, and listening to the voices of the people.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Richmond is a great city and we want to keep it clean. Volunteer with us at The Great Big Cleanup on Earth Day to beautify our streets and keep trash from polluting the James River, our main source of drinking water. There are 20 cleanup sites to choose from! As a thank you for all your hard work, lunch is on us! We’re hosting a community cookout in Swansboro after the morning cleanup event.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
In celebration of Earth Day 2023, volunteers will be collecting trash at sites strategically selected across the Southside.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
None. All supplies (safety vests, pickers, trash bags, gloves, sharps containers) will be provided. RSVPing is recommeneded but not required.
Time Commitment:
Please come out for as little or as long as you can! The cleanup will start at 10am and run to 12:30pm. Volunteers are welcome to stay at one site or bounce around and de-litter as many sites as possible! Can't make it to a specific site? Pick up trash in your own neighborhood and show off your progress using on social media with #RVACleanUp

- Please bring water and wear weather-appropriate attire. Close-toed shoes are always recommended.
