Brief Organizational Description:

HomeAgain works to end homelessness for families and individuals in the Greater Richmond region by providing shelter, housing, and the supportive services needed to help people rebuild their lives and achieve lasting stability.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:

This Thanksgiving season, HomeAgain invites community groups, faith organizations, and corporate teams to host and serve a holiday meal for approximately 85 adults and children staying in our family shelters. This volunteer opportunity provides an opportunity to share warmth, nourishment, and community spirit with families working hard to rebuild their lives after experiencing homelessness.

Groups may choose to prepare the meal on-site in our shelter kitchens or cater and bring in a prepared meal from an outside vendor. Either way, volunteers will host and serve the meal directly to residents—creating a welcoming and celebratory Thanksgiving experience.

Please note: volunteers will be responsible for sourcing and providing the meal, as HomeAgain does not have pre-prepared meals available for this event.

  • Purchase or cater all ingredients and supplies needed.

  • Prepare and/or warm food on-site (if cooking at the shelter).

  • Set up and decorate the dining area as desired.

  • Serve the meal to shelter residents and share in the celebration.

  • Clean up the dining area and kitchen following the meal.

  • Great for groups of 8–12 volunteers.

  • Volunteers should be comfortable preparing or serving food.

  • Volunteers must coordinate food delivery, preparation, and timing in advance with HomeAgain staff.

  • No special training or background checks are required for this one-time opportunity.

Time Commitment:

The Thanksgiving meal typically takes place on or around Wedneday, November 26) though alternate dates may be coordinated for group availability.
Expected commitment: 4–5 hours, including setup, meal service, and cleanup.
