MLK Day - Seeds of Legacy: Building the Emmanuel Dinga Fielding Trail
Brief Organizational Description:
Esther Manor Farm is a community-focused farm dedicated to preserving African agricultural traditions, growing traditional African specialty crops, and promoting food access and education. Our crops are highly nutritive and medicinal. Our mission is to cultivate connection, heritage, and nourishment through sustainable farming and community engagement.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
This project requires hands-on support to make the trail ADA-accessible, paint inspirational signs, create guideposts and paint signs using reflections from Dr. King, spiritual texts, and African traditions. Volunteers are essential to bring this vision to life, helping create a meaningful community space that honors Dr. King’s legacy, celebrates cultural heritage, and connects people with nature, education, and service.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

Clearing and preparing trail paths to make them safe and ADA-accessible, including removing debris, trimming overgrown vegetation, leveling uneven surfaces, and ensuring a smooth walking path

Painting inspirational signs to enhance the trail experience

Creating guideposts featuring reflections from Dr. King, spiritual texts, and African traditions

Helping with setup and cleanup of materials and work areas

Supporting a welcoming and safe environment for all participants
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

Ability to perform light to moderate physical tasks, including lifting, bending, trimming vegetation, clearing debris, and walking on uneven surfaces

Comfort working outdoors

Basic safety awareness and the ability to follow instructions

Attention to detail for tasks like painting signs and creating guideposts

Teamwork and good communication skills to collaborate with other volunteers
Time Commitment:
Minimum 4 hours

Volunteer Hours Verification: Attendance will be tracked at check-in. Volunteers do not need to bring a separate log.
Orientation or Training: A brief on-site orientation will be provided at the beginning of the day, including safety instructions and task assignments. All necessary guidance for clearing paths, painting signs, and creating guideposts will be provided.
Recommended Attire: Comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor work, closed-toe shoes, hats, and sunscreen. Volunteers may get paint on clothing, so wear something you don’t mind getting messy.
Parking Information: Parking is available on-site; follow posted signs and staff directions.
What to Bring: Water bottle, gloves, and a positive attitude.
Special Instructions: Be prepared for weather conditions, including sun, rain, or cooler temperatures. Volunteers should be ready to work on uneven terrain and assist in collaborative tasks. Respect the cultural and spiritual content of the trail signs and guideposts, and follow staff guidance at all times.
