Brief Organizational Description:
We are excited to welcome VCU students, staff, and alumni to UGK Community First for their Day of Service as they join us in caring for our neighbors and community. UGK Community First provides nourishing, farm-to-table meals and fresh groceries made with locally sourced, whole ingredients for neighbors managing chronic diseases, including cancer. Guided by a food-as-medicine approach, we support healing and well-being while honoring dignity and cultural foodways through culinary education across Greater Richmond, Petersburg, and Chesterfield.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Volunteers will come together for a meaningful, hands-on experience measuring, weighing, and packaging dried beans, grains, spices, and cooking oils to support neighbors facing food insecurity and chronic illness. This service opportunity allows VCU students and staff to make a direct impact while learning about food as medicine and community care. Every bag packed helps provide nourishment, dignity, and hope to families across our region
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
- Weigh and measure bulk pantry items such as beans, grains, spices, and oils
- Bag and seal items according to pantry guidelines
- Keep packing areas clean, organized, and stocked
- Help ensure each bag is packed with care and consistency for our neighbors in need
Other Information (if applicable):
- All volunteers are asked to wear comfortable pants, a shirt with sleeves , and closed-toe shoes (no crocs) Please bring a light jacket as our pantry may be cold at times.
- There is parking onsite. Parking Instructions will be emailed 24 hours after registration
