Garden & Greenhouse Workday at the Fit4Kids Farm
About Fit4Kids: Greater Richmond Fit4Kids is a nonprofit dedicated to improving children’s health and wellness through physical activity and healthy eating. Through our school garden programs, we help students build connections to fresh food, science, and the outdoors.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Join us at the Fit4Kids Farm in eastern Henrico and help support the gardens that serve local schools and youth programs across the Richmond region. Volunteers will assist with a variety of hands-on tasks that help our garden program grow and thrive. The work completed during these volunteer days directly supports school gardens, garden clubs, and other initiatives that help kids learn where their food comes from.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Tasks will vary depending on the needs of the farm and gardens that day and may include:

Supporting compost production and soil preparation

Assisting with planting and transplanting seedlings

Filling grow bags or containers with soil

Mixing or labeling soil amendments

Harvesting or preparing plants for distribution to school gardens

General greenhouse and garden maintenance tasks
Volunteers will work alongside Fit4Kids staff to help prepare materials and plants that will be used in school gardens and community initiatives.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements: No prior gardening experience is necessary. Volunteers should be comfortable working outdoors, getting their hands dirty, and completing light physical tasks such as bending, lifting soil bags, or standing for periods of time.
Time Commitment: 3 hours

Recommended Attire:
Dress comfortably for the weather and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Closed-toe shoes are required. Garden or work gloves are recommended, but extras will be available.
What to Bring:
Please bring your own water, snacks, and any personal items you may need.
Facilities:
A portable restroom will be available on site.

Parking details will be shared with volunteers prior to the event.
