This project has the unique ability to immediately make a positive impact in lives. Volunteers will help pickup roadside trash along Woodpecker Road. Whether the trash floats out of truck beds or is thrown out of windows, it poses an imminent threat to our wildlife within the park. When trash lands along the road, it still smells of food and drink reside. That smell immediately attracts wildlife such as raccoons, opossums, foxes, and other small wildlife. The unfortunate result is well known - animals alongside the road are often hit by vehicles. Furthermore, when the roadkill is left alongside or in the road, many of our large birds of prey will also be hit by cars as they attempt to catch and eat the prey. This means many hawks, vultures and owls are hit by vehicles every year because of trash. The secondary effect of trash is also negative, it looks makes the landscape look disheveled and only encourages more trash to be deposited. Everyone makes trash, but if each one of us takes one small step to reduce trash in our wild areas, we can collectively make a huge difference. Each volunteer will receive a free day’s entrance pass to the Park for the day after volunteering.
See your My Account for parking and meeting instructions. Volunteers need to bring: reusable water bottle, weather appropriate clothing, bug spray and sunscreen as needed, closed toe shoes. Park provides all tools such as orange safety vests, trash pickers, buckets and trash bags.
