Fall Planting at the park behind Ernest Rd.
Brief Organizational Description:
The mission of Southside ReLeaf is to improve the quality of life in the Southside by greening communities and advocating with our neighbors. We envision a future where equitable access to green spaces and environmental justice are integral to the Southside Richmond community's expectations, public policy, and daily practice.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Sep. 23 - Volunteers will be planting small to medium native shrubs and trees in the park behind Ernest Road.
October - Volunteers will be planting herbaceous plugs and quarter in the park behind Ernest Rd.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Sep. 23 - Volunteers will remove native tree and shrub plants from containers, break up root balls, and plant them in the ground.
October - Volunteers will removed native herbaceous plugs and quart size plants and plant them in the ground. Those who would like may assist with augering holes, if necessary.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
No specific skills are necessary, though gardeners are encouraged to join. We will be happy to show you how to plant if you are new to the process. Please be prepared to navigate uneven terrain, lift, bend, squat, and dig.
Time Commitment:
Tuesday, September 23: 11:00 am - 2:00 pm (3 hours).
Wednesday, October 1: 11:00 am - 2:00 pm (3 hours)
Thursday, October 2: 11:00 am - 1:30 pm (2.5 hours)
Monday, October 6: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (3 hours)
Please commit to being on-site for a minimum of 90 minutes. Feel free to arrive later than our start time!
Tuesday, October 7: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM (1 hour)
For Tuesday, volunteers and walkers are welcome.
Other Information (if applicable):
- Attendance will be verified via CFEngage.
- Planting instructions will be available onsite.
- Please wear shoes that can navigate uneven, potentially muddy terrain.
- Park anywhere in the vicinity of 2913 Ernest Rd., being mindful not to block mailboxes. Once parked, you’ll walk down the grassy path with the “No Parking” sign and follow the path to the right. Please note that the path leading to the park may be muddy and slippery if it has recently rained.
- Feel free to bring your own gloves. Gloves will be provided. Please bring a reusable water bottle.
