YMCA Welcome Center Adult English Classes
Brief Organizational Description:
The Anderson Family Welcome Center at the Manchester Family YMCA is part of the YMCA of Greater Richmond, dedicated to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Anderson Family Welcome Center at the Manchester YMCA focuses on supporting community members by providing resources, education, and community connections.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose: We are seeking dedicated Volunteer ESL Classroom Assistants to support our English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Volunteers are essential in helping adult learners practice English, gain confidence, and build connections in their new community. Your support ensures students receive more individualized attention and feel welcomed as they pursue their goals.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

Assist instructors during ESL classes with classroom activities and discussions

Work one-on-one or in small groups with students to practice English conversation, reading, and writing

Help distribute and organize learning materials

Encourage students and contribute to a positive, inclusive classroom environment

Support classroom set-up and clean-up as needed
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

Patience, encouragement, and enthusiasm for working with adult learners

Strong communication skills (no teaching experience required)

Bilingual ability (especially Spanish) is a plus but not required

Volunteers must complete a YMCA volunteer orientation and/or background check depending on regularity.
Time Commitment: Volunteers can choose to server as frequent as they want. Commitment time is from 6:30-8:30pm

Volunteer hours are tracked thrugh.

Orientation and training are provided by YMCA staff prior to beginning.

Dress is casual but professional; please wear comfortable clothing suitable for classroom settings.

Free parking is available on-site.

Volunteers do not need to bring materials; all supplies will be provided.
