Northstar Library Volunteer

Brief Organizational Description: 
 At Northstar, our mission is to promote educational excellence and career opportunities for students with disabilities who have academic, physical, or social challenges. As a nonprofit independent school, we serve 125 students from across Central Virginia. We help each student reach their full potential—academically, socially, and vocationally—in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Do you love books and enjoy hands-on projects? Join us as a Library & Administrative Support Volunteer! Northstar’s library is a cozy, welcoming space where students discover new interests and grow as readers. Volunteers play an important role in keeping this space organized, inviting, and functional. In addition to helping maintain the library, you’ll also support staff with light administrative tasks that help our classrooms and offices run smoothly. Your time helps create an environment where students and teachers can focus on learning and growth.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reshelve returned books in the correct sections
  • Straighten and tidy bookshelves
  • Assist with organizing displays and seasonal book features
  • Help update bulletin boards and prepare visual materials
  • Support light administrative tasks such as writing or assembling letters, cutting out materials, and preparing classroom or office resources
  •      
  • Light cleaning of tables and surfaces as needed

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

  • Attention to detail and a willingness to help where needed
  • Comfortable working independently and following simple instructions
  • Ability to stand, bend, and move around the library as needed
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must sign a confidentiality agreement

Time Commitment:

  • 2 hours per month (flexible weekday schedule during the hours: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.)
  • Consistent monthly participation is appreciated

Other Information (if applicable):

  • Volunteer hours can be verified by Northstar Staff
  • Orientation and library walkthrough will be provided at your first visit
  • Business casual, comfortable attire recommended
  • Free parking is available on-site (public transportation is not available)
  • Please check in at the main office upon arrival
