Forest View Cemetery Preservation Workday – MLK Day of Service

Brief Organizational Description:

The City of Richmond’s Cemeteries Division preserves and maintains historic inactive cemeteries while engaging community partners and volunteers to protect, document, and honor these sacred cultural landscapes.


Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:

Join us for a meaningful MLK Day of Service at Forest View Cemetery. This volunteer workday focuses on documenting, identifying, and cataloging surface-level artifacts and objects found on site — no excavation required.
Your work helps protect the history of this once-forgotten cemetery and ensures that items found can be respectfully documented and preserved for future interpretation and descendant engagement.

This is a unique opportunity to support preservation work that blends history, care, and service.


Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

Volunteers will assist with:
• Documenting and cataloging surface-level objects
• Recording locations and photographs of items found
• Supporting staff in mapping, organizing, and labeling objects
• Light debris clearing around objects before photographing (if instructed)

All tasks will be supervised by Cemeteries staff. Volunteers will not disturb any remains.


Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

• No prior experience is required
• Must be comfortable working outdoors in natural terrain
• Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult
• All tools, gloves, and documentation materials will be provided
• Photography skills are helpful but not required


Time Commitment:

January 19, 2026 – MLK Day of Service
10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Volunteers should arrive 10–15 minutes early for check-in and instructions.


Other Information:

Hours will be verified in CF Engage; attendance will be recorded on-site
Attire: Closed-toe shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, long sleeves recommended
Parking: Parking is available along Bassett Avenue near the cemetery entrance
What to bring: Water bottle, phone (optional, for photography), gloves if you prefer your own
• All work is above ground — no digging or excavation will take place
• This is an open volunteer event, but spaces are limited to ensure proper supervision, careful documentation work, and safe handling of all materials.
