Northstar Illumination Gala Volunteer

Brief Organizational Description:
At Northstar, our mission is to promote educational excellence and career opportunities for students with disabilities who have academic, physical, or social challenges. As a nonprofit independent school, we serve 125 students from across Central Virginia. Our programs help students gain confidence, build independence, and build community connections that prepare them for meaningful futures.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Volunteers are essential to the success of Northstar’s annual Illumination Gala, a signature fundraising event that supports programs and services for students with disabilities. Gala volunteers help create a welcoming, smooth, and enjoyable experience for guests while ensuring event operations run efficiently throughout the evening.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volunteers may assist with one or more of the following tasks:

  • Event setup prior to guest arrival

  • Greeting guests and assisting with registration and check-in

  • Supporting guest participation in games and activities

  • Assisting with silent auction checkout and guest questions

  • Event breakdown and cleanup at the conclusion of the gala

Duties will be assigned based on shift timing and event needs.

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

  • Friendly, reliable, and professional demeanor

  • Comfortable interacting with guests in a fast-paced environment

  • Cocktail attire 

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and assist with light lifting if needed

  • Must be 21 years or older

  • No prior experience required; on-site guidance will be provided

Time Commitment:
Volunteers may sign up for one or more shifts:

  • 6:00–8:00 PM

  • 7:30–9:30 PM

  • 9:00–11:00 PM

Each shift is approximately 2 hours.

Other Information (if applicable):

  • Verification of Hours: Volunteer attendance will be tracked by event staff

  • Orientation/Training: Brief on-site orientation provided at the start of each shift

  • Recommended Attire: Cocktail-appropriate attire with comfortable shoes

  • Parking: Free on-site parking available

  • What to Bring: A positive attitude and willingness to help

  • Special Instructions: Volunteers should arrive 10 minutes before their scheduled shift to check in and receive assignments
