Earth Day Stewardship at Evergreen Cemetery
Brief Organizational Description:
The City of Richmond’s Cemeteries Division preserves and maintains historic burial grounds as sacred spaces of remembrance, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship. We engage the community in hands-on efforts to protect and restore these important landscapes.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Join us for an Earth Day community stewardship event at Evergreen Cemetery on Wednesday, April 22. Volunteers are needed to assist with focused vegetation management efforts that support ongoing restoration and preservation work. This activation highlights the environmental value of historic cemeteries as urban green spaces while engaging the community in meaningful service.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volunteers will assist with:

Ivy and invasive vegetation removal in designated areas

Clearing overgrowth along approved sections

Collecting and staging brush for disposal
Work will take place in one consolidated area to ensure safety, supervision, and quality control.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
No prior experience is required. Staff and partners will provide an on-site safety briefing and task guidance at the start of the event. Volunteers must be able to work outdoors and perform light to moderate physical activity such as bending, lifting, and pulling vegetation.
Children are welcome but must be supervised by an adult at all times.
Time Commitment:
Wednesday, April 22
1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Volunteers should plan to stay for the full two-hour activation.
Participation will be capped at 50 volunteers.

Tools and gloves will be provided.

Please wear long sleeves, long pants, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and weather-appropriate attire.

Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are recommended.
