rvaMORE Trailwork Day: Northbank ramp removal
rvaMORE is a Richmond based nonprofit that works to promote good trail stewardship as it advocates for and supports the natural surfaced trails in the Richmond region.
The James River Park System Invasive Plant Management team will be working in the area two weeks prior to our volunteer workday, removing bamboo in flagged areas.
Sign up here to help us with the second step of the project: removing the wooden ramp and building a new section of sustainable trail.
There will be no removal or change to the rock feature named "stairway to heaven" above the project: our workday instead focuses on the canal-level wooden ramp below it.
Meet curbside at the Northbank trailhead located at the intersection of Kansas Avenue and Hampton Street. There is plenty of street parking available, but please be respectful of the neighbors and do not block driveways.
We will have coffee and donuts to share before the workday. Arrive a little early and sign in with a volunteer, grab a cup of coffee and a treat, and we will hike in to the project site together. The JRPS Trail Crew will go over the work needed, and our project will begin.
The JRPS Trail Crew will work with volunteers and disassemble and remove the ramp from the bottom up, disposing of the old planks at street level.
After ramp disassembly and disposal, volunteers will point their efforts toward finishing a new section of natural surfaced trail to restore access to riders, runners, hikers, and other trail users.
- The workday will run from 9am until noon.
- Bring your own water bottle, we will bring a 5 gallon water dispenser to share.
- This volunteer opportunity involves manual labor: digging, lifting, carrying pieces of lumber, and other "yardwork" style efforts.
- Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
- Bring your own pair of work gloves.
- We will provide all tools.
- There is plentiful street parking in the neighborhood around the trail head - please be considerate of the parking needs of the adjacent neighbors.
