DIY: Backpacks for Recovery Classes
Brief Organizational Description:
CARITAS creates a safe space and a time to rebuild for individuals experiencing homelessness and/or addiction. We have 5 programs:emergency shelter, residential recovery, workforce development, sober living housing and a furniture bank.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
The Healing Place is our peer-driven, residential recovery program. It’s open 24/7/365, offering recovery services at no cost to men and women with substance use disorders. In 2025, The Healing Place offered 144,012 hours of recovery education. To ensure participants are prepared for class, volunteers can support us by putting together backpacks for our recovery programs.
Recovery Backpack Details:
These backpacks provide men and women in The Healing Place with essential items for their daily classes as they work toward recovery alongside their peers.
Please fill a sturdy, adult-sized backpack with the following items:
- 2 one-subject, college-ruled spiral notebooks
- 4 black ink pens
- 1 small hand sanitizer
- 1 small flashlight
- 1 encouragement card
We are willing to take as many backpacks as you desire to put together.
Once assembled, please drop off the backpacks at the CARITAS Center (2220 Stockton Street, Richmond, VA 23224) between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday–Friday. Please use this link to schedule your drop off date. https://caritas.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=54538
Time Commitment:
Backpacks can be assembled at your convenience and dropped off on any weekday between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. This opportunity is completed off-site, and volunteers are responsible for assembling and delivering the backpacks to the CARITAS Center.
