Spring 2026 Hickory Hill tree maintenance community workday with Parks Dept.

Brief Organizational Description: 
Southside ReLeaf is a community-based organization committed to environmental justice in South Richmond. Our goal is to improve the life expectancy and quality of life for Southside residents by increasincpaces, reducing pollution and improving infrastructure. We believe in uplifting voices that are often unheard and people-powered advocacy to build climate resilient neighborhoods.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:

Along with the Richmond City Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Department, we will be performing tree care maintenance for young and adolescent trees behind the Hickory Hill community garden and building.  

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volunteers will be using wheelbarrows, shovels and other tools to remove weeds, move mulch, and layer mulch around the base of trees, replacing cages if necessary.

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
There are no special skills required.  Those with a will ability to improve the landscape, and work with and in their community are fully equipped for success.  If you don't have experience with tree maintenance, this is a fantastic oppportunity to learn.

Time Commitment:
Saturday, June 13, 2026 9a-12p (3 hours)

Please plan to stay for a minimum of 90 minutes but feel free to arrive later than our start time and/or leave before our finish time.

Other Information (if applicable):

  • Volunteers will have their work hours confirmed in the CFEngage system.  If you need any documentation signed, please bring it with you to the event. 
  • We will do a sample tree together to ensure that people feel comfortable. 
  • Closed toe shoes are required.
  • Park in the lot to the side of the community center.  There are community gardens, soccer fields and a playground visible as you pull in.
  • Snacks and water will be provided.  If able, please bring a refillable water bottle.
  • Feel free to bring your own gloves. Gloves and tools will be provided.
  • The community center is not usually open on weekends, so please be proactive about using the restroom prior to heading over Saturday morning.
