Henrico Co. Tree ID and Canopy Assessment Training Session
Volunteer Opportunity: Tree Canopy Assessment Training
Join Henrico County and Capital Trees for an informative volunteer training session focused on enhancing and expanding our local tree canopy!
Capital Trees is a local nonprofit working to transform Richmond’s public landscapes into thriving, sustainable greenspaces that restore nature and strengthen community. With the help of volunteers, partners, and neighbors, we nurture vital habitats that clean air and water, welcome wildlife, and create space for health and connection. So we invite you to step off the pavement, get your hands in the dirt, and be part of planting a greener, healthier city!
Healthy tree canopies play a critical role in mitigating urban heat islands, improving air quality, reducing stormwater runoff, capturing carbon, and increasing resilience to the growing impacts of climate change. By helping assess and expand tree coverage throughout Henrico County parks, volunteers will directly contribute to cooler neighborhoods, healthier ecosystems, and more sustainable community greenspaces.
Volunteer Details
This hands-on training will equip participants with essential skills in:
- Tree identification
- Invasive species identification
- Tree canopy assessment methods
- Conducting tree inventories
- Using GIS-based tools and software for field data collection and mapping
Participants will learn how geographic information systems (GIS) technology is used to document tree locations, assess canopy coverage, and collect environmental data that supports long-term planning and restoration efforts. Volunteers will gain practical experience using digital mapping and data collection tools commonly used in urban forestry and environmental conservation projects.
Designed for Henrico County staff and summer interns, this opportunity is also open to community members interested in supporting local environmental and reforestation efforts.
Participants who complete the training will be eligible to sign up for future site-specific canopy assessment and inventory projects within Henrico County parks. These efforts directly support the county’s ongoing reforestation program and long-term tree canopy expansion initiatives.
Whether you are passionate about conservation, climate resilience, urban forestry, GIS technology, or improving community greenspaces, this is a great opportunity to make a meaningful impact while learning valuable field skills.
