Join the City of Richmond, Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities' Cemetery Division for a weekend workday at Oakwood Cemetery. Oakwood Cemetery, located at 3101 Nine Mile Road, spans 199 acres and reflects Richmond’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. Along with being the resting place of more than 17,000 soldiers, it also holds the remains of generations of families from across the community. It is tied to the remarkable story of Union Colonel Ulric Dahlgren and Elizabeth Van Lew.
Volunteers are needed to assist with completing string weeding, cleaning grave markers, clearing sidewalks, removing debris and brush, and removing non-compliant flower arrangements in accordance with city codes and ordinances.
Tools and gloves will be provided. We recommend wearing a hat, long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also recommended. Volunteers are asked to bring water bottles and snacks. Children are welcome, provided an adult is present to supervise them.
WHERE: Oakwood Cemetery - 3101 Nine Mile Road, Richmond, VA 23223. From I-64E, take exit 193B for Nine Mile Road (VA-33 West) toward Richmond. Continue on Nine Mile Road for about one mile, and the entrance to Oakwood Cemetery will be on the right. We will have a sign-in table near the entrance. Please be sure to stop and sign in, even if you've volunteered with us before.
