EVERGREEN CEMETERY MLK DAY OF SERVICE
The City of Richmond’s Cemeteries Division and the Friends of East End preserve and maintain historic inactive cemeteries while engaging community partners and volunteers to honor, protect, and restore these sacred cultural landscapes.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Join us for a powerful MLK Day of Service at Evergreen Cemetery, one of Richmond’s most significant African American burial grounds. Volunteers are needed to help clear overgrowth, open pathways, and support ongoing preservation work that keeps the cemetery accessible, dignified, and safe for families and descendants.
This service day is an opportunity to honor Dr. King through action while helping safeguard a space that holds generations of Richmond history.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volunteers will assist with:
• Clearing brush, sticks, and light debris
• Opening and maintaining service lanes
• Supporting overgrowth removal in designated zones
• Assisting staff with basic grounds care and beautification
• Helping preserve safe, respectful access throughout the cemetery
All instructions will be provided on-site by the Cemeteries staff.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
• No prior experience needed — all skill levels welcome
• Ability to work outdoors and navigate uneven ground
• Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult
• All tools, gloves, and materials are provided
Time Commitment:
January 19, 2026 (MLK Day of Service)
10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Volunteers are encouraged to arrive 10–15 minutes early for check-in and instructions.
Other Information:
• Hours will be verified through CF Engage (attendance will be recorded on-site).
• Recommended attire: Closed-toe shoes, weather-appropriate layers, long sleeves, and clothing suitable for outdoor work.
• Parking: On-site parking will be available near the main entrance; staff will direct volunteers upon arrival.
• What to bring: Water bottle, sunscreen/hat if needed, and a great attitude for community service!
• This event is entirely outdoors — please dress for natural terrain and winter weather conditions.
