Capital Trees Wednesday LowLine Garden Maintenance
Brief Organizational Description:
Capital Trees is a local nonprofit working to transform Richmond’s public landscapes into thriving, sustainable greenspaces that restore nature and strengthen community. With the help of volunteers, partners, and neighbors, we nurture vital habitats that clean air and water, welcome wildlife, and create space for health and connection. So we invite you to step off the pavement, get your hands in the dirt, and be part of planting a greener, healthier city!
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
90% of the maintenance for the Lowline Gardens is provided by volunteers. Without this generous contribution from people like you the gardens would not exist. The Lowline Gardens provide a welcome respite from urban gray space to the users of the Capital Trail, the residents in the area and visitors.
The gardnes filter stormwater, provide habitats for pollinators and other wildlife, and improve our physical and mental health. They also mitigate the effects of heat islands and heat-related illnesses; in fact, heat-island effects can increase temperatures by 10-20 degrees in an urban area! Enhancing and maintaining Richmond’s tree canopy coverage and greenspace is a step toward a healthier, happier, and more equitable community.
