Opportunity Details
Snap! Pop! Crunch! Winter Solstice in the Park
The Organization:
The James River Park System consists of approximately 600 acres of forested land in the city of Richmond along the James River. Staff and volunteers work year-round to remove invasive plants and create opportunity for native species to thrive.
The Event:
Do you like to break sticks in half and crunch twigs under your shoes? Are you interested in learning about how to be a more responsible neighbor to plants and animals? Start your morning on the shortest day of the year engaging with nature in the James River Park System!
A member of the JRPS Invasive Species Management team will provide participants with an educational introduction to invasive plants- what they are, how they impact the park, and our relationship with them. Then the group will hike to a designated area filled with large shrub debris, and together will step on or manually break down the branches there into smaller pieces.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
*Register to participate and receive updates about event.
*Arrive by 9am.
*Wear long sleeves, long pants, socks and sturdy closed-toe shoes.
*Bring drinking water.
*Return a completed Youth Waiver Form if under 18 years old:
