Evergreen/East End Cemetery Invasive Plant Removal

Join Friends of East End, Friends of James River Park, and Richmond Parks & Recreation for Invasive Species Awareness Week as we remove invasive plants, open up historic pathways, and help care for this important African American burial ground.

Help us celebrate Invasive Species Awareness Week (RISAW 2026) by rolling up your sleeves at East End Cemetery.

Volunteers will work alongside Friends of East End (FOEE), Friends of James River Park – Invasive Species Management, and the City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities – Cemeteries Division to remove invasive plants and vines, clear overgrowth, and support ongoing restoration efforts at this historic African American cemetery.

This hands-on workday helps:

  • Improve visibility and access to grave markers and historic pathways

  • Reduce invasive plant pressure on trees and native vegetation

  • Support long-term care and stewardship of East End and neighboring Evergreen Cemetery

No experience is necessary—staff and experienced volunteers will provide orientation, safety guidance, and demonstrate removal techniques.
