Opportunity Details

Invasive Removal at the Heritage Half Acre

Brief Organizational Description:

The James River Park System consists of approximately 700 acres of forested land in the city of Richmond along the James River. Staff and volunteers work year-round to remove invasive plants and create opportunity for native species to thrive.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation's Division of Natural Heritage (DCR-NH) focuses on science-based conservation to protect Virginia's native plant and animal life and the ecosystems upon which it depends. Scientists collect data on natural communities and rare plants and animals, develop land conservation data and online mapping tools, and provide up-to-date information to enable timely conservation decisions.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:

Join the Invasive Species Management (ISM) team and our partners in DCR's Natural Heritage division as we celebrate their 40th anniversary for a day of invasive species removal in the Heritage Half Acre on Buttermilk Trail. What better way to pay homage to the group of dedicated scientists that help monitor our state's worst invaders than to do removal with them at their own half acre plot in the park system!

Leaders and volunteers will meet at 9am at the listed meeting location on Wednesday, April 29. We will be working on selective ground cover removal.

Tools, work gloves, and other instruction will be provided by staff on site.
