Invasive Species Removal at the Wetlands

Brief Organizational Description:

 The James River Park System consists of approximately 745 acres of forested land in the city of Richmond along the James River. Staff and volunteers work year-round to remove invasive plants and create opportunity for native species to thrive.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:

Join the James River Park System’s Invasive Species Management team in removing invasive plants and contributing to native habitat and biodiversity! Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about the unique ecosystems we're working to protect.

Leaders and volunteers will meet at 9am on scheduled Wednesday mornings at the open meadow in The Wetlands. We will be using pruners, loppers, and/or non-electric handsaws to free trees of invasive vines, remove invasive shrubs, and clear out other invasive plants in the understory. Volunteers will receive notice of any last minute changes due to things such as extreme weather via email.

Tools, work gloves, and instructions will be provided by JRPS staff.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Register to participate and receive updates about event.
  • Arrive by the start time (9am). Stay until the end of event (12pm).
  • Wear lowng sleeves, long pants, socks and sturdy closed-toe shoes.
  • Bring drinking water.
  • In addition to the event description (above), physical activities also include walking, bending, kneeling, and squatting. With questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the event coordinator prior to event.
  • Experience isn’t necessary (But learning is!)

Hazards include but are not limited to: poison ivy, thorns, stinging insects, uneven terrain and weather conditions. Please prepare accordingly.

Location:

The entrance to the Wetlands can be found at 3309 Landria Dr., Richmond, Va 23225. Parking is available along Landria Dr. Once you arrive, please follow the main gravel path down into the park until you get to the open meadow (about 1-2 minute walk). The event coordinator will be there with tools and everything else we will need.
